Artist's Comments

The 2008 lunar eclipse as seen from south-eastern Australia. This is a HDR composite from three shots. I borrowed a 500mm lens and this was the best final image of the night. It's amazing how fast the moon moves in the viewfinder when you are looking through a long lens.

dude wiked moon shot... iv been trying to make moon pics but i cant get it right what there the 3 f stop speeds you used for the HDR composite?

For this eclipse shot I used a 500mm lens (on my Nikon D-90 with a DX sensor that's the same as 750mm) on a tripod (obviously). I fully opened the aperture and set the camera to underexpose -3 stops. Using a remote shutter release I took three auto bracketed exposures (-2,0,+2) in rapid succession. Then in photoshop used each of the 3 images as a layer and aligned them exactly, temporarily using 50% transparency for the upper layers (because the moon will have moved in each frame slightly). I Then saved each aligned layer as a new image and combined those as HDR. If you just wanted to take a nice pic of the full moon I would just under expose at lease three stops (experiment) and shoot while the moon is low on the horizon so you can aim more easily. Sometimes low shots can add orange or yellow tints because of the effects of dust or smoke in the atmosphere. If you live in a hot climate, shots taken in winter will have less distortion from turbulence (caused by heating of the air). Have fun.
